SummerSlam Memories By Lewis Carlan

Summer 1991, New York

Ever since 1988, the WWE PPV SummerSlam has been entertaining professional wrestling fans every August. Known as “the biggest party of the summer”, SummerSlam has given us some excellent matches between top stars of the industry. But to me, there is one match that stands out from the rest of them.

It happened at SummerSlam 1991 as Mr. Perfect defended his Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship against Bret Hart. This match had it all, great action, great in-ring psychology, great suspense and two incredible workers at the top of their game. What made this match even more spectacular was the back injury Curt Hennig was suffering from yet he was still able to give it 110%. The in ring chemistry between the two was simply phenomenal. As we know, Bret Hart won the match and the Intercontinental title which was his first step towards superstardom.

I will admit, when I first watched the match back in 1991 as it was happening, despite being a Bret Hart fan, I didn’t think he had a chance of winning. I was on my feet for much of the match and popped with the fans on the TV screen when Bret was victorious. It will be hard for another match to knock the Bret Hart vs. Mr Perfect match at SummerSlam 1991 off the top of my SummerSlam list.
